Meet the team

Matthew Pearson

Director, Plumber and Gasfitter

With more than a decade’s experience across commercial, industrial, and high-end residential new builds, Matt brings serious expertise to every job. He started Blackbox in 2020 with the ambition of building an exceptional business — one that grows through high quality work, great service, and lots of happy customers. He grew up in Wanaka (Otago) and Clevedon (South Auckland) and he’s most at home in the outdoors, especially on a yacht on the Hauraki Gulf. He’s also right at home on the tools, and is a hands-on leader of the Blackbox team.

Ben Tavae

Qualified Plumber and Gasfitter

Ben loves the variety plumbing brings. “No two days or jobs are the same and I go to all corners of Auckland.” He also enjoys being part of the journey from start to finish on new builds and renovations and says he takes pride in seeing a functional, beautiful kitchen, bathroom (or roof or backyard) emerge. He’s a keen gym junkie, traveller, and rugby league fan. “In my spare time I’m usually outside in nature,, getting together with friends and family or chipping in with some volunteer work in my community.”

Kevin Guan

Qualified Plumber and Drainlayer

Kevin chose plumbing and drainlaying because he’s a ‘hands on guy’. He loves to get in amongst it and solve problems and fix things. He also enjoys meeting all sorts of Aucklanders through the course of his work. “The other great thing about plumbing is there’s always something new to learn and I can see my skills getting broader on every job.” Kevin is a keen traveller and fisherman and he keeps fit for drainlaying by going to the gym and doing Jujitsu.

Kevin speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.

Taylor Maaka

Qualified PlumbeR

Taylor began plumbing in 2015 and has over a decade’s experience on large scale commercial and high-end residential work. He has worked at heights in the CBD which he doesn’t mind and crawling deep underground, which he does mind (“cos spiders”). He enjoys the renovations, new builds and restaurant/cafe fitouts because “you get a chance to finetune the more elegant side of the trade and produce high-end work that clients really appreciate.” In his other life he loves the outdoors, camping and “beers with the boys.”
